Safety Switch Testing: Push-Button vs Trip-Time (What's the Difference?)

There are two tests for a safety switch, and they do very different jobs. The push-button test just checks the switch moves — you press the button, the power cuts out. The trip-time test uses an instrument to measure how fast it trips under a real fault, and that speed is the bit that actually keeps you alive. Passing the button test does not mean your safety switch trips fast enough.

Let’s unpack that, because it trips a lot of people up (no pun intended).

First — what a safety switch actually does

A safety switch (electricians call it an RCD, for residual current device) watches the electricity flowing out and back on a circuit. The instant it senses a leak to earth — like current running through a person who’s touched something live — it cuts the power in a fraction of a second. It’s the single most important life-saving device in your switchboard, which is why RCD & safety-switch testing exists as its own service.

The push-button test

This is the one anyone can do. You press the “T” or “Test” button, and the power to that circuit should drop out immediately. If it doesn’t — or if the button trips but the outlets stay live — you’ve got a problem, call a sparky. It’s quick and worth doing, but all it confirms is that the mechanism moves. It tells you nothing about speed.

How often: every 3 months for portable safety switches, every 6 months for the fixed ones in your switchboard.

The trip-time test

This is the proper one, done by a competent person with a calibrated tester. It measures exactly how many milliseconds the switch takes to trip when a real fault current is applied. Under AS/NZS 3760, a standard 30mA safety switch has to trip within 300 milliseconds — that’s faster than you can blink — and a more sensitive 10mA one within 40 milliseconds. Anything slower fails and comes out of service.

How often: every 12 months for fixed switchboard safety switches (more often on high-risk sites).

Why the button test isn’t enough on its own

Safety switches wear out. Dust, moisture, corrosion and just sitting unused can make the internal mechanism sticky and slow. A switch can still “click” on the button test while tripping way too slowly to save anyone — which is exactly why the timed test exists. Relying on the button alone is a false sense of security.
