Test & Tag

How Often Do You Need to Test and Tag in QLD?

By Ryan Howson, Electrical Contractor

The short answer: it depends on how rough the environment is. The tougher the conditions your gear works in, the more often it needs testing and tagging. There’s no single “once a year for everyone” rule — the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760 sets different intervals for different workplaces, and getting yours right is what keeps you both safe and compliant.

Here’s the plain-English breakdown.

The intervals, by workplace type

  • Construction, demolition and mining sites — every 3 months. These are the harshest environments going, so gear cops a hiding and gets checked most often.
  • Factories, workshops and manufacturing — every 6 months. Plenty of movement, dust and heavy use, so twice a year.
  • Commercial cleaning equipment — every 6 months. It’s dragged around and lives near water.
  • Gear that gets moved, flexed or knocked about — every 12 months. Think portable tools and leads in a busy commercial space.
  • Static office equipment that never moves — up to 5 years. A computer that sits on a desk in a clean, dry office is low-risk, so the interval stretches right out.
  • Hire equipment — before it goes out, then every 3 months.

Why the environment matters so much

The whole system is built on risk. A drill on a building site gets thrown in a ute, dropped and rained on — its cord fails fast. The same drill in a tidy workshop lasts far longer. The Standard recognises that, which is why a construction site is on three months and an office is on five years. It’s not about the gear being different; it’s about what happens to it.

What about brand-new equipment?

New gear doesn’t need a full electrical test straight out of the box — it just needs a visual check and to be recorded in your register before first use. From there it falls into the normal cycle for your workplace.

Not sure which bracket you’re in?

That’s the common one. A lot of sites are a mix — an office up front, a workshop out the back, gear that moves between them. Run your environment through our free Interval Checker for an instant answer, or read up on whether test and tag is actually the law if you’re weighing up whether it’s worth doing at all. Either way, it’s exactly what we sort out on a site visit.
