Industrial sites (factories, workshops, plants) are harsher, with more machinery, heavier use and often three-phase power, so testing is more frequent and there’s simply more to cover.

The environment sets the interval

This is the heart of it. Under AS/NZS 3760:

• Commercial, low-risk (an office computer that never moves): up to every 5 years.
• Commercial with gear that gets moved or knocked about: every 12 months.
• Industrial — factories, workshops, manufacturing: every 6 months.

The type of gear is different

A commercial site is mostly leads, computers, kitchen appliances and office equipment. An industrial site adds heavy machinery, power tools, three-phase equipment, extension and welding leads, and gear working in dust, heat or moisture. More variety and more hostile conditions mean more to inspect and a sharper eye needed on each item.

Volume and scheduling

Industrial sites usually have a lot more items, and shutting equipment down for testing has to be planned around production. That’s where a proper schedule and a good asset register earn their keep — you test in a planned window, not by pulling machines offline randomly.

Three-phase and fixed equipment

Industrial sites lean more on three-phase and hardwired equipment. Hardwired gear isn’t “test and tagged” the same way portable gear is, but it still needs to be safe and maintained — which is where having a licensed electrician (not just a tester) on the job matters.
