Switchboard Upgrades

Do You Need a Switchboard Upgrade Before Solar, a Battery or an EV Charger?

By Ryan Howson, Electrical Contractor

Solar, a home battery and an EV charger all connect to your electrical system through the switchboard. If the board is old, full or under-specced, the installer will often tell you it needs upgrading first. Here’s why, and how to find out before you get quotes.

Why the switchboard matters

Every one of those additions asks something of the board:

  • Space. Each new circuit needs somewhere to go. A board with no spare slots can’t take it.
  • Protection. New equipment generally needs to be protected by the right safety switches and breakers. An old board with ceramic fuses, or without safety switches, isn’t set up for that.
  • Capacity. Adding a large load, such as an EV charger running alongside air conditioning, hot water and cooking, can push the total demand on your supply. That needs to be worked out properly rather than guessed.
  • Condition. Old wiring and old components aren’t a sound foundation for new, expensive equipment.

Solar

A solar system feeds power back through the switchboard, so the board needs to be in good shape and set up to take it. Installers commonly find that an old board with rewireable fuses, no safety switches or no spare space has to be brought up to standard first.

Batteries

A battery adds a further set of connections and protection requirements. It’s usually installed alongside solar, so the same checks apply, and they’re best sorted out in one visit.

EV chargers

A home charger normally needs its own dedicated circuit with appropriate protection. Two things to check:

  • Is there space and capacity for it? Charging draws a lot of power for hours at a time.
  • What protection does the charger need? The right type of safety switch depends on the charger, and it’s part of the design, not an afterthought.

Depending on your supply and what else runs at the same time, you might also need to look at load management or, in some cases, changes to the supply. A licensed electrician can work that out at the inspection.

How to tell if you’re likely to need an upgrade

Yes, probably, if your board has:

  • Ceramic fuses, or no safety switches
  • No spare space for new circuits
  • Signs of age or damage: heat, scorching, buzzing or corrosion
  • An asbestos backing panel (see asbestos behind your switchboard)
  • A history of tripping or overloading

Maybe not, if it’s a modern board with safety switches and spare space, but it still needs to be checked against what’s going on it.

Do it together

Upgrading the board at the same time as the new equipment usually works out cheaper than two separate visits, because the isolation, testing and certification happen once. It’s also the natural time to add surge protection, which matters more once you have expensive electronics on the board. See surge protection for solar and EV chargers.

What to do first

Before you sign up for solar or a charger, get your switchboard looked at, and ask the installer to put any board work into the quote so there’s no surprise later. If you’d like a licensed electrician to assess it, get in touch and we’ll give you a written switchboard upgrade quote covering scope, materials and timeline.
