Surge Protection for Solar Systems and EV Chargers

By Ryan Howson, Electrical Contractor

Solar panels and EV chargers are good for the power bill, but they also add some of the most expensive electronics in the house to your electrical system, and they’re wired straight to your switchboard. That makes them a bigger target for surges than most appliances.

Why they’re more exposed

  • They’re wired to the board. An inverter or charger is hardwired, so there’s no plug and no power board that can protect it.
  • Solar has a big footprint. Panels, cables and the inverter make a lot of exposed metal and wiring in a lightning-prone region.
  • They’re connected to everything. A solar system talks to the roof, the switchboard, the meter and often the internet. A spike has several ways in.
  • They’re expensive. An EV charger is typically $1,200–$3,000 to replace, and a solar inverter can cost well over that, before you count the labour.

“Doesn’t it have built-in protection?”

Many inverters and chargers have some surge protection built in. That’s a good start, but it’s designed to handle limited spikes and it’s part of the same unit it’s protecting. A device fitted at the switchboard handles the bigger spikes before they get that far, so the built-in protection has less to deal with.

What about the warranty?

Manufacturer warranties often carry conditions, and many exclude damage from lightning or power surges. Read yours, ask your installer, and don’t assume it’s covered. Your insurer’s position is a separate question, and it varies between policies.

How the protection works

A surge protection device at the switchboard protects every circuit fed from that board, so a solar system and a charger connected to it get the benefit along with everything else in the house. In some installations, extra protection at the inverter or on the DC side of a solar system may be recommended as well. That depends on the equipment and the site, and it’s something to talk through with a licensed electrician.

Worth doing at install time

If you’re adding solar or a charger:

  • Ask about surge protection as part of the quote, rather than as an afterthought.
  • Check the switchboard first. An old or full board may need work before it can take new equipment, and that’s the ideal moment to fit surge protection too. See switchboard upgrades before solar, batteries or EV chargers.
  • Keep the paperwork. A certified install gives you something to show an insurer or a future buyer.

If your system’s already installed, adding surge protection later is a simple job at the board.

The 30-second surge check lets you tick off solar, an EV charger and everything else in your home, and shows the value at risk and a fixed price to cover the lot.

Keep your cover intact.
